Is the Belarusian political opposition weak?
Published: 04 April 2011
There is no political opposition in Belarus in the Western sense of the word, because the regime’s opponents are de facto not allowed to be elected to representative bodies. However, there are people who disagree with the politics of Alexander Lukashenka, and there are alternative candidates running in Belarusian elections at various levels. The main reason for the opposition’s weakness is that its candidates are not allowed to use state media (radio, TV) and, as a result, no one knows about them. The oldest opposition party in Belarus is the Belarusian Popular Front.
